Youth Art Initiative

How it Works

At Rukoko we love supporting local art and we’d like to encourage young artists between the ages of 13 and 18 to submit artworks to us.  This initiative will run every two months with deadlines posted on our Facebook page and indicated by the timer on this page.  We want to encourage creativity and therefore won’t limit the medium, size or the subject.

The Bigger Picture...

As artists ourselves the art world came as a shock – we were surprised by the contracts, hurdles, critique, admin, pricing and unspoken rules.

Art as a vocation is easily dismissed because very few courses offer youngsters the hands-on experience of being an artist.  We’d like to change the perception and arm our teenage artists with experience in dealing with galleries, contracts, marketing and the administrative and copyright side of being an artist.

Being a creative can be hugely fulfilling and if approached correctly, a rewarding career.  In the longer run we’d like to facilitate talks by other artists, curators, gallery owners and collectors on their perception and experience of this industry and offer insight usually only exposed to during the later years of an artist’s career.

how to enter:

  • Send us up to 3 entries via our website. Entries received after the deadline will automatically roll over to the next cycle.

  • Deadlines for submission will be posted on Facebook and our website.  After the deadline we will pick the bi-monthly finalists.  These artworks will need to be delivered to Rukoko Art Gallery for the final selection – each bi-monthly cycle will feature a different guest judge.  Artworks do not need to be framed.

  • We will post our final results to Facebook and these artworks will be featured in Rukoko Art Gallery’s Youth Initiative Section. If the artworks are available for sale, we will display them as such with a price agreed on by the artist.  We want to expose the young artists to the experience of being part of a gallery and will have them sign a rudimentary ‘artist contract’.

  • The artworks chosen will be displayed for the 2 month cycle. We will also host a ‘People’s Choice’ competition voted for by the gallery patrons.  This Certificate and Prize will be presented to the winner at the end of the cycle.

Please Note:

  • Entry is open to Highschool Students between 13 and 18 years of age.
  • Only original artworks completed by the student will be accepted.  Images of artworks submitted must be clear, visible and in focus.  Kindly crop to show only the artwork – no frames or other text on the image please.  Artworks containing offensive content will not be considered.
  • Judges decisions are final.  Finalist artworks cannot be submitted more than once.  Artwork images will be used for marketing and display purposes on our website and other social media networks.  The Artist will retain all copyright to the artworks.
  • Timeous delivery and collection of the artworks selected as finalists will be the responsibility of the entrant.  Delivery due dates will be confirmed once finalists are selected.
  • The artist will need to sign a rudimentary gallery contract to allow artworks to be displayed in the gallery. As with all other artworks displayed a commission will be charged on sales (though this will be a reduced commission for this initiative).
  • Though we do not require artworks to be framed and will take the utmost care to display artworks safely, we do not accept responsibility for damage due to the artwork not being framed.
